the low pO 2 treatment in both species. Immunogold labelling showed that the MAC265 antigen was localThe pasture legumes Lotus uliginosus (Schk.) and ized primarily within intercellular spaces within nodule Lotus corniculatus (L.), known to differ in their tolercortices from both Lotus species. A marked decrease ance to flooding, were inoculated with Rhizobium loti in deposition of the MAC265 antigen within the cortiand flooded for 60 d while subjected to two levels of ces of L. uliginosus nodules grown in the lower pO 2 . dissolved pO 2 : 0.241 and 0.094 mmol ml−-1. L. uligis discussed in terms of the relative abilities of the inosus showed significantly greater growth (shoot and two Lotus spp. to maintain an O 2 supply to the N 2 root) and N 2 fixation under both pO 2 s, compared tofixing bacteroids within submerged nodules. L. corniculatus, although growth and N 2 fixation by L. corniculatus was not affected by the low pO 2 .

TILLING mutants of Lotus japonicus reveal that nitrogen assimilation and fixation can occur in the absence of nodule-enhanced sucrose synthase.

In all plant species studied to date, sucrose synthase occurs as multiple isoforms. The specific functions of the different isoforms are for the most part not clear. Six isoforms of sucrose synthase have been identified in the model legume Lotus japonicus, the same number as in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and rice (Oryza sativa). The genes encoding these isoforms are differentially expre...

Contrasted Reactivity to Oxygen Tensions in Frankia sp. Strain CcI3 throughout Nitrogen Fixation and Assimilation

Reconciling the irreconcilable is a primary struggle in aerobic nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Although nitrogenase is oxygen and reactive oxygen species-labile, oxygen tension is required to sustain respiration. In the nitrogen-fixing Frankia, various strategies have been developed through evolution to control the respiration and nitrogen-fixation balance. Here, we assessed the effect of different ...

Effect of salt stress on nodulation and nitrogen fixation in legumes.

It is now well established that almost all phases of root nodule development in legumes are adversely affected by saline conditions in the rooting medium. There is also a general agreement that the rhizobia are more tolerant to salt stress than the host plant, but they show considerable strain variability in growth and survival under saline conditions. Inhibitory effect of salinity on nodulatio...

Association between aflatoxin contamination and N2 fixation in peanut under drought conditions

Traits related to nitrogen fixation may be used as indirect selection criteria foraflatoxin resistance in peanut. The aim of this study was to investigate therelationship between N2 fixation traits and aflatoxin contamination in peanut underdifferent drought conditions. Eleven peanut genotypes were evaluated under threewater regimes for two seasons in the field. Data were observed on kernel inf...

Root strength and trampling tolerance in the grass Paspalum dilatatum and the dicot Lotus glaber in flooded soil

1. We studied the differences in root strength of species with contrasting root structural types (the grass Paspalum dilatatum and the dicot Lotus glaber ), and their relationship with tolerance to simulated cattle trampling under flooding conditions. 2. Root strength was analysed through measurement of the pressure required to cause root collapse. The responses of aerenchyma and plant mass to ...
